Wrapping Up Corn Silage Season | Chronicles of Kayla
Chronicles of Kayla
•
This episode wraps up the 2026 corn silage season, taking you from the field all the way to covering the silage pit. We harvest the whole plant (stalk, fodder, cob, and corn) and pack it tight to push out oxygen and kick off fermentation, because packing is the critical step for good silage. Silage won’t be ready until after Halloween or later, so in the meantime our cattle are fed dry hay and wet bales. With the hay side of the farm taking priority right now, cattle work is on the back burner, but the offseason will bring weaning, vaccinations, and calving preparations. To seal the pit, we ordered a new tarp from Kooima Ag, which arrived quickly and was installed with the help of bales lining the sides for a better seal. Covering this pit protects a serious investment of time, acres, and money.
