The wheat straw harvest is in full swing, and we’re working long days—sometimes until midnight—to bale and haul thousands of bales before severe weather arrives. We made a crucial efficiency change: hauling bales during the day instead of at night, which is much better for our bodies and time, and allows the planters to follow closely behind. Using our Massey Ferguson 1842S small square baler paired with a Bale Baron pull-behind setup, we’re averaging 700 to over 850 bales per hour with three trucks transporting bales to keep pace. After some technical difficulties, our spare backup baler became the primary unit. We tested a double baler—impressive at 1,400 bales per hour—but concluded our single pull-behind system is more practical for our operation and keeps equipment passes minimal. Beyond the numbers, working long hours in the tractor has become an outlet for processing grief and life’s changes.
