Before the apple trees go in this fall, the groundwork starts now. In this video, I'm out seeding grass in a new field block here at the orchard in Traverse City, Michigan — getting the ground cover established ahead of our fall apple planting.
Proper ground prep is one of the most overlooked steps in starting a new orchard. Getting the right grass cover in place before planting fruit trees helps with soil health, erosion control, and long-term orchard management.
We're walking through exactly how we do it here at Pomes and Stones.
What's covered in this video:
1.Why we seed grass before planting apple trees
2.Our process for preparing a new orchard block
3.What to expect heading into fall planting season
Whether you're a commercial grower, a hobby farmer, or just curious about how Michigan specialty crop farms operate — stick around. There's a lot more coming as we move through the growing season. 🍎🌱 Subscribe to follow along through every stage of the season on our Michigan apple and cherry farm.
