Today's episode focuses on our current farm operations as we prepare fields for cattle feed and plan our future crop rotations.
We're spreading fertilizer on triticale using a fertilizer buggy - an efficient tool that allows for an even spread across the field. We're estimating the triticale will be ready to mow for hay in approximately 30 to 35 days, so timing is everything right now.
This field has an interesting history. It was previously used for alfalfa for several years, but due to drainage issues and performance, we've shifted our farming strategy for this land. Now we're rotating between triticale and corn silage, which provides essential feed for our cattle while keeping the land in production.
Overall, the triticale is looking healthy. We did notice some browning on the tips caused by a recent freeze, but we're optimistic that the crop will thrive with some rain. That's the hope for the next few days!
One of our key farming principles is keeping the cattle feed supply one year ahead. This requires careful planning and strategy. Depending on future feed needs, the corn we have planned for this field may be harvested as silage or shelled for grain. Either way, we can utilize the stalks for cattle grazing afterward, making the most of every resource.
This kind of long-term thinking and crop rotation is what keeps a cattle operation running smoothly and efficiently.
