Buzzzz Bees in the Alfalfa | Chronicles of Kayla
Hay Season 2026

Weather didn’t cooperate, so our alfalfa got ahead of us and started to bloom. Full bloom usually lowers feed quality, so we decided to turn the situation into an experiment. Our friend Jacob, an experienced beekeeper who manages 50 to 60 hives, brought five hives out to the field. He’s been wanting to test whether blooming alfalfa can produce a specialty honey, and this is his chance. The hives hold roughly 50,000 bees in a double deep brood box and 30,000 to 40,000 in each single box. Once the bees settle in, they’ll forage for nectar during the day and return to the hives at night. The plan is to leave them in the field for 10 to 14 days and hope for dry, sunny weather while they work.
