U.S. farm debt is projected to reach a record $625 billion in 2026. Farm interest expense is approaching $33 billion, and government payments are providing a significant share of net farm income. Is American agriculture beginning to look like it did before the 1980s Farm Crisis?
Damian Mason compares the agricultural economy of 2026 with 1981, examining rising borrowing costs, inflation, energy prices, farmland values, global conflict, agricultural trade friction, and increasing dependence on government support.
There are critical differences. Farm bankruptcies remain far below the levels experienced during the Farm Crisis, debt-to-asset ratios are relatively low, and many older farmland owners carry limited debt. But those strengths do not eliminate the financial challenges facing production agriculture.
The bigger question is whether American agriculture has become too dependent on government programs and policy intervention to maintain farm income and financial stability.
The recovery from the 1980s Farm Crisis was ultimately aided by stronger economic conditions and a major expansion in global agricultural demand, particularly as China became an increasingly important customer for U.S. agriculture. There may not be another China waiting to drive the next agricultural demand boom.
Watch this episode of The Business of Agriculture for Damian’s analysis of farm debt, agricultural interest expense, government farm payments, farmland values, agricultural trade, and what the lessons of the 1980s can tell us about the future of American agriculture.
