America is losing farms at a rapid pace, but is Big Ag consolidation really to blame?
Stephen Banks, founder of the Farm Security Initiative and a former construction-industry entrepreneur, traveled 10,000 miles across 19 states to investigate the economic pressures reshaping rural America. He came away convinced that American agriculture needs structural change, including limits on how much of the meat-processing industry any one company can control.
Damian Mason challenges that conclusion. Is the decline in farm numbers evidence that the agricultural system is broken, or is farming experiencing the same consolidation that has transformed banking, airlines, telecommunications, and other industries?
