Hay Season Starts Now - First Cut Alfalfa! ๐พ๐
It's officially here - hay season! Today we're documenting the beginning of our first cut alfalfa, and let me tell you, we're ready.
Why We Do This:
This channel has always been about sharing our farming journey authentically. As we continue to navigate life and honor Keaton's memory through our work, farming keeps us grounded. It keeps us moving forward. And sharing these moments with you feels important.
The Equipment:
We're utilizing our WR 265 windrower with a 13T head and single conditioner - basically a "combine for grass." We had hoped for a twin max setup, but we're satisfied with what we have and already eyeing future upgrades. This equipment is crucial for getting a clean, quality cut.
Field Conditions:
Despite recent heavy rains, the field is in excellent condition with minimal tracking. The alfalfa we planted last spring is clean and ready. The timing is crucial too - new shoots for the second cut are already emerging, so this first cut is necessary now.
We're operating the mower at approximately 10.2 to 10.5 mph to ensure a clean cut, especially since some of the alfalfa has been laid down by the rain.
The Process:
Once the mowing is underway, we'll ted the hay in the morning to help it dry. We're counting on upcoming sunshine and wind to prepare it for baling. After mowing operations get started, we'll move cows and handle other necessary farm chores - because the work never stops.
The Reality:
This is hay season. Long days, strategic decisions, timing that has to be perfect. It's hard work, but it's honest work. And after everything our family has been through, being out here in the field feels like healing.
